Guide to Wild Plant Collection in Montana
This guide was created by our dear friend Susan and is a beautiful starting point for beginning foragers in the area.

This collection of useful information was put together by Samantha Maynard for a wonderful event discussing Ethical Foraging that we led together back in 2023.
Foraging the Mountain West
Hands down our favorite foraging book out there! This one is special. Written by our friend and local Montana author and instructor, Tom Elpel. This nontraditional foraging book gets into urban foraging, dumpster diving, harvesting roadkill, and utilizing invasive species. It contains thoughtful perspectives, personal stories and fun recipes.
Botany in a Day
Another masterpiece by the one and only, Tom Elpel! A foundational plant identification guide we love for its simple breakdown of plant families. Great for beginners ready to deepen their knowledge and understand patterns across species.
Wildcrafting Checklist from the Columbines School of Botanical Studies in Eugene, Oregon
We find this list to be more thoughtful than most. Great to print out and keep in your foraging bag!
The Honorable Harvest by Robin Wall Kimmerer
An extended excerpt from the book Braiding Sweetgrass, a must read for anyone looking to deepen their relationship and understanding of the plant world, which of course we hope is everyone!
Landback
We exist in infinite gratitude to the original stewards of this land and fully support Landback initiatives. LANDBACK is a movement that has existed for generations with a long legacy of organizing and sacrifice to get Indigenous Lands back into Indigenous hands. Currently, there are LANDBACK battles being fought all across Turtle Island, to the north and the South.
